POP SUPERSTAR
ENGELBERT HUMPERDINCK
TELLS HIS REMARKABLE LIFE STORY IN
ENGELBERT: WHAT'S IN A NAME?,
PUBLISHED BY VIRGIN BOOKS

How Arnold Dorsey Became the Inimitable Engelbert Humperdinck and One of the Biggest Selling Artists in Music History

A Story of Superstardom, Hollywood Parties & a Long Struggle to the Top Plus, Of Course, One or Two Skeletons in the Closet...

New York - Forty years at the top of the showbiz ladder, selling in excess of 130 million records, hobnobbing with Dean Martin, Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra, winning a Golden Globe, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame...Engelbert Humperdinck's long and glittering career is the stuff of legend. But for the world-renowned singing sensation, 'The King Of Romance' to his legions of adoring fans, life wasn't always this regal.

Engelbert: What's In A Name? (Virgin Books; January 30, 2005; $24.95) tells the remarkable story of how Arnold Dorsey became the inimitable Engelbert Humperdinck and one of the biggest selling artists in music history. The youngest of 10 children in a British family originally from Leicester, England, he spent the first ten years of his life in Madras, India, where his father was stationed during World War II, and then moved to England in 1946. His autobiography, written with L.A.-based journalist Katie Wright, recounts the highs and lows of his childhood and early adulthood, including his two-year stint in the British military and the first time he set eyes on Patricia, his wife of 40 years.

For the first time, Engelbert reveals his struggle in the early 1960's along the tough road to the top. He describes the bout of tuberculosis that silenced him for six months and almost finished his career before it even began. Soon after recovering he changed his name to the flamboyant and memorable one that households around the world now associate with some of the most enduring songs of all time, including #1 hits Release Me and The Last Waltz.

Rumours have always swirled about Enge's extra-marital affairs and resulting out-of-wedlock births. Engelbert honestly lays it all out: the pain he caused his family, the excessive drinking binges, the unwarranted arrest for possession of drugs, his insecurities and lack of self-confidence and more. The book even includes Patricia's perspective in a fascinating section in her own, moving words.

This gripping autobiography is a story of superstardom, Hollywood parties and palaces - but also of a man who has held onto his success through dedication, determination and an indebtedness to his millions of incredibly loyal fans.
