O'Donnell's worldwide success is a far cry from the day Daniel used his own savings to record and release his first song, over twenty years ago. The singer's life is a fascinating tale of humble beginnings and a journey to musical success.
O'Donnell speaks very fondly of his family's stone home in the little seaside village of Kincasslagh (in Ireland’s Donegal County), which had an open-hearth fire with pots hanging from crooks and simmering over hot coals. O'Donnell's father, a hard working farm laborer, passed away when O'Donnell was six, yet his childhood was idyllic, with an inspiring mother, four older brothers and sisters, and a house full of relatives singing and telling stories.
When he formed his own band he quickly discovered that success doesn’t come easy. After months of mounting financial problems, Daniel found himself washing dishes at Dublin’s Central Hotel and seriously contemplating emigrating to Canada.
As the now legendary story goes, he decided to make one final, last ditch attempt at stardom by putting what little savings he had into recording Johnny McCauley's popular hit, "My Donegal Shore,” which he released independently as a 45.
Little did he know, with thoughts of emigration still weighing heavily on his mind, that the record was receiving substantial radio airplay and the "buzz” about this young singer had reached the ears of Ritz Records. The rapturous applause from 80,000 people at the 1985 London Irish Festival quickly assured him a record deal.
True success came in 1987 when his second album, I Need You, hit the U.K. Country Album Charts. It set a precedent that has seen every album that followed entering these charts - and most of them debuting right at the top - as well as several of them regularly enjoying Top 20 positions at the same time.
Finally, after years of hard work and grueling gigs, Daniel O'Donnell had became a household name.
Meanwhile his success story continues. Recent recognitions include an Honorary MBE awarded by Queen Elizabeth for his "services to the music industry,” as well as two nominations in the U.S. for CMA's Global Country Artist Award.
Daniel's recordings, DVDs and videos have appeared regularly on Billboard's charts from the moment they were released here. At one point recently, O'Donnell had nine out of fifteen albums on the World Music chart - including the #1 spot. In fact, he has had more placements on the World Music chart than any other artist.
Away from the spotlight, Daniel O’Donnell has devoted time and energy to visiting the sick and infirmed and to the Romanian Challenge Appeal, a charity that’s now become a personal crusade.
While many artists would be content to rest upon their laurels, O’Donnell never seems to tire. With concert appearances that have taken him from London’s Royal Albert Hall and Dublin’s Point Depot to New York’s Carnegie Hall and Sydney’s Opera House, he continues to set himself new worlds to conquer.
"Irish superstar Daniel O'Donnell understands the deep connection between traditional Irish and American country music. I found the show homey and endearing..."
- San Antonio Star-Telegram
“In a pop culture world dominated by jarring rap and oversexed bubbleheads… O'Donnell's comfortable mix of easy, brogue-laced banter and nostalgic standards is a refuge” - Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
